Description

The hidden river

The square where the Carroccio procession starts is, since the 50s, a cover of the river Olona, under which water flows in two canals, rearranged in the 2000s.

The course of the river Olona crosses an area in the center of the city, subsequently covered in order to become a large square with a public garden. On the day of the Palio di Legnano, it is the meeting place of the contrade that from here leave from the historical parade. The entrance to the Cotonificio Dell'Acqua is recognized on the background of the image; today the area is occupied by the former Pretura palace and the square dedicated to Anacleto Tenconi, former Mayor of Legnano in the 50s. The Olona flowed close to the De Amicis Elementary Schools: the wire mesh had the function of protecting schoolchildren from possible falls in the river.
