Description
The
Ecosystem of “La Foppa” as a standard of biodiversity
excellence.
The
Foppa is a wetland area near Olona river that flooded
naturally. Once upon a time, water was accumulated here
to irrigate the meadows. Today the Foppa is fed with the
water of the river. The nearby Foppa, meadows and
forests are ideal habitats for wildlife. The Foppa
bordering Olona river was known as the "Lanca of the
Marquise", being a land in a remote past owned by the
noble Cornaggia family. Since 2009 the Municipality of
San Vittore Olona in collaboration with the association
Olona viva, the Consorzio fiume Olona and the Parco dei
Mulini has restored this wetland. The Foppa is fed with
water from the Olona River through the Bellona
irrigation ditch. Today, this stretch of water and the
surrounding green areas, a forest and a meadow, are home
to a rich biodiversity of fauna and flora.
In this area the LIPU has spotted as many as 90
different species of birds . A small wetland such as the
Foppa is of fundamental importance for migratory species
that travel twice a year thousands of miles to return to
reproduce or to overwinter; sometimes they make a stop
to feed themselves in this place.
At the Foppa there are also fish and many other animals
that feed on eggs and larvae of aquatic insects, which
is why there are so few mosquitoes!
Listen to the voice of the Foppa: the croaking of frogs,
the chirping of birds, the breath of the river.
