The poplar yesterday and today

A bit of history…

Contemporaries of Virgil used this tree to store the fruit during the winter covering it with poplar sawdust, since the bark and the buds contain essences with antiseptic properties. In Roman Age it was considered that even the poplar had medical properties, it was used indeed to prepare infusions to cure from illand its gems were used to treat burns.

…Today

The poplar is often used in the parks – like that where it winds the Virgilian Route – and along the boulevards for its decorative aspect of its follage.
Since it is a tree that grows very quickly, for its high efficiency at transforming sun energy in biomass, the poplar is cultivated in order to have wood for plywood, boxes and matches (because it is a bed heat conductor and burns slowly) and especially to produce paste to the paper industy.
